Floating Between Tides - Statement
Exhibiting at Lizard Art Gallery Summer Exhibition 4th June - 23rd August 2026, Trelowarren Estate, The Lizard
My work explores the fragile conversation between sea, light, and time through the process of cyanotype. Using seaweeds and natural forms gathered along the coast of Cornwall, I create images that are both botanical records and quiet acts of remembrance. Each print is made using sunlight, seawater, and hand-collected specimens, allowing the landscape itself to participate in the making of the work.
The cyanotype process, with its deep oceanic blues, mirrors the tidal environment from which these materials emerge. Seaweeds become silhouettes, shadows, and traces — suspended between scientific documentation and abstraction. Their delicate structures reveal systems of growth, resilience, and constant transformation shaped by the rhythms of the coast.
Walking the shoreline, gathering fragments left by the tide, is central to my practice. These collected forms carry evidence of movement, erosion, and survival. By placing them directly onto light-sensitive paper, I preserve fleeting encounters with the natural world while acknowledging their impermanence. The resulting works invite close attention to textures and patterns that are often overlooked.
This exhibition reflects on our relationship with coastal ecologies and the quiet intelligence of marine life. In a time of environmental uncertainty, the works ask viewers to slow down and consider the interconnectedness of land, sea, and body. Through the elemental language of cyanotype, I hope to create spaces of stillness, curiosity, and care — where nature is not simply observed, but deeply felt.
